A Word About Bodywork

In my journey of healing and self-realization, I've come to view the combined use of 'internal' and 'external' bodywork through the lens of martial arts as a powerful metaphor as I have experience with each. Both martial arts and bodywork share commonalities and distinctions, each offering unique insights into understanding and harnessing the interplay between internal and external dimensions for our well-being and personal growth. Let me share with you the parallels I've discovered:

Commonalities:

  • Internal Awareness: Whether in martial arts or bodywork, the cultivation of internal awareness is paramount. In the realm of martial arts, this involves becoming attuned to our own energy, emotions, and intentions. In bodywork, this takes the form of deep sensitivity to a client's internal states and energy flow.
  • Harmony and Balance: Achieving harmony and balance is a fundamental quest in both domains. In martial arts, this means finding equilibrium between the mind and body, allowing them to work in synergy. In bodywork, it translates to the art of balancing a client's energy and helping them release pent-up tension.
  • Mind-Body Connection: Both disciplines emphasize the profound connection between the mind and body. In martial arts, this connection allows us to focus our mental energy to enhance our physical techniques. In bodywork, we weave emotional and energetic awareness into our practice, creating a holistic approach to healing.

In my practice and personal journey, I've found that these two approaches are not mutually exclusive; in fact, they complement each other beautifully. Just as martial artists choose to integrate elements of both internal and external techniques to become well-rounded practitioners, I've discovered that the balance of internal and external bodywork is a profound way to tap into self-awareness, inner equilibrium, and personal growth. The choice between these approaches ultimately depends on one's individual goals, preferences, and the specific benefits they seek to attain on their path to well-being and self-realization.
